I was sexually assaulted during my first year of medical school. I went out with friends, had way too much to drink, and went to an after party with people I didn’t know well enough. I wasn’t on birth control because I didn’t intend to be having sex. A few weeks later I found out I was pregnant. Even if I hadn’t been impregnated by a rapist, I was neither mature enough, nor could I have continued in my profession as I wished if I had continued the pregnancy. Miraculously, the clinic I went to waived the cost of my abortion because I was a member of Medical Students for Choice as a “professional courtesy”. I’m a mom and an Emergency Physician now and reproductive choice made all the difference in my life.
