Statement on the Georgia Runoff Election

Advocates for Youth congratulates Senator Raphael Warnock for his win in the Georgia Senate. With Jon Ossoff holding a strong lead, we may see Democrats win both seats and take a Senate majority – a huge win for Georgia and for the nation.

We owe much to the organizers and voters who made it happen. Now, it will be possible to begin to correct some of the terrible cruelties of the Trump Administration and the McConnell-led Senate – and to move forward with a truly progressive agenda. Youth activists will celebrate this win – and then keep the pressure on the Biden-Harris Administration for movement on LGBTQ rights, immigrant rights, abortion access, reproductive health care, an end to anti-Muslim policies, an end to police violence, and more.

Meanwhile, Trump and his supporters continue to attempt to subvert democracy, as they have been doing for years. Senators and Members of Congress who refuse to acknowledge the people’s choice for President should be ashamed. Though their efforts cannot change the outcome of the election, they send the message that these lawmakers will defy the law and the Constitution in their desperation to keep their power.

We have the work of Black organizers to thank for this win – for a tireless, decade-long effort to reduce barriers to voting and end voter suppression. And we are especially excited to congratulate Senator Warnock, the first Black senator from Georgia.

Young people are ready to leave 2020 behind. January 20th can’t come quickly enough. Some of the harm caused by Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell can never be undone, but young people will keep working to ensure the safety, health, justice, and liberation for all young people.
