Advocates for Youth on Florida Supreme Court Abortion Rulings
Yesterday, the Florida Supreme Court issued two rulings on abortion: one upholding a 15-week ban, and one paving the way for a statewide vote that could enshrine abortion access into the Florida Constitution.
In response, Debra Hauser, President of the national nonprofit Advocates for Youth, issued the following statement:
“Advocates for Youth condemns the Florida Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a 15-week ban on abortion and clear the way for a six-week ban – before many people realize they are pregnant – to take effect within the next 30 days.
Abortion restrictions disproportionately impact young people, who already struggle to access abortion care given busy schedules, financial barriers and logistical hurdles. The Court’s ruling profoundly impacts the autonomy and well-being of young people and their ability to make fully informed decisions about their reproductive health.
While these restrictions are devastating attacks on abortion access, the Florida Supreme Court has also given voters the chance to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution this November. Now more than ever, young people and allies must stay informed, engaged, and vocal in this fight. Our collective voices are powerful tools for change, and together, we can work towards a future where every young person has the autonomy to make decisions about their own bodies and futures without unnecessary barriers or restrictions.”
Abortion activists and young people in Florida and across the country are available for interviews to discuss how youth activists are mobilizing to protect abortion access in the face of restrictions that disproportionately impact their generation.
