Learn more about Turnaway

The Turnaway Project is a reproductive freedom / abortion rights campaign looking to support youth activists in raising awareness of the Turnaway Study , and the Turnaway Play (based on the Study).

The Turnaway Study is a 10 year scientific research project that followed 1000 diverse women to definitively answer the question, “what happens to a person who wants an abortion but cannot get one?” Turnaway’s game-changing data debunks common abortion myths and dangerous false claims. It’s also helping to dispel abortion stigma and change the national conversation!

Spoiler alert! The main finding of The Turnaway Study is that receiving an abortion DOES NOT harm a person’s health and wellbeing; in fact, being denied an abortion results in worse financial, health and family outcomes.

The Turnaway Play, written by Lesley Lisa Greene, is inspired by Dr. Diana Greene Foster’s groundbreaking Turnaway Study, which provided scientific evidence that receiving an abortion does not harm the health and wellbeing of abortion-seekers, while being denied an abortion results in worse financial, health and family outcomes. Characters in the play are based on Turnaway Study subjects, and the play uses the words and experiences of these real people to bust myths and reduce abortion stigma.

*The Turnaway Project acknowledges that people of ALL GENDER IDENTITIES need and have abortions! This study focused on people who self-identified as “women” at the time the research was conducted.
