Trans Affirming Schools Project VPD Scenarios
The TASP VPD scenarios have been designed for professionals seeking to create inclusive and affirming spaces for young people who are transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive (TNGE). These skill development sessions are designed to be completed after participating in the Finally Enough Love training, or can be completed on their own for professionals seeking to build a specific skill.
1) Discussing Transgender Topics Using Affirming and Inclusive Language
The participant will engage a group of students informally and use affirming and inclusive language when answering questions about transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive (TNGE) people, communities, and topics.
2) Maintaining Confidentiality about Transgender and Non-binary Students
The participant is teaching a lesson on gender identity to high school students and will be required to honor the confidentiality of all students’ gender identities while answering questions in affirming and inclusive ways.
3) Interrupting Harmful Language about Transgender and Non-binary People
The participant will meet with a new teacher who has questions about how to support transgender and nonbinary people. This conversation will give them a chance to interrupt and redirect harmful language when it’s being used by peers.
4) Addressing Questions from Families about Transgender and Non-binary Students
Learners are meeting individually with a parent who has questions about the school’s procedures related to transgender and nonbinary students and has specific questions about the student population. Learners will practice answering questions that maintain students’ privacy, interrupt harmful language and misconceptions, and affirm the experiences of transgender and nonbinary people.
About the Trans Affirming Schools Project (TASP)
The Trans Affirming Schools Project (TASP) is an extension of the LGBTQ Health and Rights work at Advocates for Youth. TASP began as an effort to address the needs of transgender and non-binary young people in schools, and became an intervention in a time of rampant anti-transgender misinformation and disinformation. Informed by our Youth Activist Network and centering racial justice and trans liberation, TASP continues to thrive by providing our education series, Finally Enough Love, and maintaining an up-to-date digital resource guide.
