Job Opening: State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: Advocates for Youth’s Abortion Access team supports youth access to abortion through the following culture shift and policy advocacy strategies: campus and state organizing around campaigns to increase youth access to abortion, practical support (supporting with logistical aspects of access), and abortion storytelling (sharing personal experiences with abortion).

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Director of Youth Abortion Access, the State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will manage efforts to support youth leaders and state-based partners for campus and state organizing to destigmatize abortion and generate support for young people’s access to abortion. This is a unique position as the State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will work in partnership to support youth leaders in their campaigns, while also managing state policy campaign efforts on abortion access. 

The State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will manage targeted state policy advocacy efforts in support of youth access to confidential abortion care. The State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will provide technical assistance and resources to states, as well as provide support, connections to storytellers, linkages to youth activists, and campaign resources to national and state partners to help them advance youth access to abortion care. This position will join appropriate coalitions in order to provide support and build out state campaigns on abortion access. 

The State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will also support the Abortion Out Loud program, a national cohort of young leaders from 30 campuses and communities across the country and will work intensively with them to engage in policy advocacy to expand and protect youth abortion access and create or strengthen practical support networks for youth abortion access in their communities. The State Campaign Manager for Abortion Access will prioritize working with students on state advocacy campaigns, such as legislation requiring medication abortion on public campuses. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizational Abortion Access Work
    • Develop strategy to engage, mobilize, and expand the network of youth activists and state partner organizations in order to lead culture shifting and policy advocacy campaigns for youth access to abortion at a local, state, and federal level.
    • Support the overall youth advocacy, culture and policy shift strategies of Advocates’ Abortion Access campaigns, as needed.
    • Support the coordination of the Youth Abortion Support Collective (YouthASC), a national network of over 600 young people committed to increasing youth abortion access in their communities.
    • Support drafting materials including: state campaign toolkits, state policy newsletters, policy briefs, talking points, action alerts, menu of services, and policy analysis/memos. 
    • Lead workshops and facilitate training on policy advocacy, abortion access, and culture shift strategies such as storytelling. 
    • In coalition spaces, champion and center the rights of young people, especially BIPOC & LGBTQ+ youth to access abortion care. 
    • Represent the organization in select coalition meetings and activities, as requested.
  • Medication Abortion on Campus
    • Supervise part-time campus coordinators leading state-based abortion on campus work.
    • Oversee a cohort of young people from across the organization’s programs who are leading campaigns for abortion access on individual college campuses.
    • Lead state-based youth organizing efforts  for state legislation to make medication abortion on campus a requirement on publicly funded campuses. 
    • Build partnerships with state-based coalitions interested in supporting youth abortion access bills. 
  • Abortion Out Loud Cohort Management
    • Oversee the national cohort of young activists from 30 campuses and communities championing abortion access by recruiting, selecting, training, supervising and providing ongoing support to members.
    • Lead monthly cohort meetings and one-on-one meetings to support individual members’ abortion access work. 
    • Support national cohort in creating a coordinated effort, such as a national week of action or national event, twice per year.
    • Provide each member of the national council with support in developing and implementing an individual action plan to grow the base of support for abortion access in their community through practical support or a campaign for abortion access. 
    • Assist in planning and coordinating the Youth Activist Institute, that brings together 150 youth activists from across nine of Advocates’ programs and provides compelling workshops, trainings, and speakers that inspire young leaders to build their skills and networks to lead organizing and policy advocacy efforts in their communities. 
  • Other tasks as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: 

  • One to three years of youth advocacy and policy campaign experience.
  • Strong organizing skills with a track record of getting people to take collective action, ideally on a college campus campaign or through a community grassroots organization.
  • Experience creating and executing strategy for a grassroots campaign. (Does not have to be a paid staff role).
  • Experience building relationships with young people ages 14-24.
  • Demonstrated interest in abortion access and demonstrated knowledge of state legislative processes and policy issues surrounding young people’s reproductive and sexual health at the state level. 
  • Interest in learning about and utilizing abortion storytelling as a form of advocacy and culture shift work. 
  • Ability to develop “big picture” strategy while keeping track of details and thinking outside the box.
  • Ability to digest large amounts of information quickly and turn it into concise, user-friendly materials for state partners, legislators, and youth. 
  • Ability to link public policy with grassroots organizing and communications’ strategies. 
  • Strong ability to build relationships and partnerships with new organizations. 
  • Must be a self-starter, able to prioritize and meet tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously
  • Strong analysis of race, class and gender, and their own identities.
  • Culturally responsive with a deep commitment to the tenets of reproductive justice.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with a diverse group.
  • Attention to detail, ability to work respectfully with peers and supervisors to contribute to a positive team environment.
  • Responsive to feedback from team members.
  • Commitment to Advocates’ mission and goals.

Preferred: 

  • Experience and knowledge in youth reproductive health, rights and justice
  • Experience in one or more Advocates for Youth programs
  • Experience as an abortion storyteller
  • Strong understanding of college and/or university systems
  • Strong knowledge base around abortion 
  • Experience building or working with an abortion practical support network 
  • Familiarity with theory of change, power mapping, policy campaign development, state policy analysis

HOURS: This is a full-time position (Monday-Thursday, 32 hours per week) and includes health/dental benefits, life and short- and long-term disability insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, professional development funds, and student loan pay-down benefit. 

START DATE: No later than August 15, 2022

SALARY: $58,000 to $65,000/year depending on level of experience
