On the day that you were born, your daddy and I sat hugging in his car for a very long while. He had his sunglasses on and gave me tissues from the glove box, we were both emotional and scared that day.
On the day that you were born, the sun was bright and the sky was blue.
On the day that you were born, there were so many other mummies waiting to see a doctor, the crowd almost made me want to go home.
On the day that you were born, your daddy kept me company in the waiting room. He was cracking jokes and talking about travel, like he does when he does not like his true emotions to show.
On the day that you were born, I choose to go in alone, I didn’t want your daddy to see something that would scare him.
On the day that you were born, there was an ultrasound. I opted not to look, I already had a picture in my mind of what you would look like.
On the day that you were born, I waited a long time with just the other mummies. Some of them looked happy, some scared, I was the only one that cried.
On the day that you were born, your daddy told me I was a very brave “kitty”, a pet name he called me sometimes.
On the day that you were born, the nurses gave me some medicine that made my head fuzzy and helped numb the pain.
On the day that you were born, I had I my legs up in stirrups, and the nice nurse ladies talked to me about Holland and the sweet sprinkles kids put on toast.
After, you were born, into and out of this world, I had some water and cookies.
After, your daddy sat quiet with me and held my hands, which he had never done before.
After, we went for a hamburger and a drink.
After, I felt relieved for a little while.
Now, I wonder what it really would have been like, on the day that you were born.
