Abortion on Campus – Washington

Every year, around 1,000 students at Washington’s public colleges need abortion services. But only one of our 44 state schools provide those services. That means some students need to travel over 70 miles to get the care they need! Washington has long been a leader in protecting the right to abortion, but protection must include expanding access.

Medication Abortion on College Campuses Bill

We’re working to get state lawmakers to pass statewide legislation to expand abortion access and information on all of Washington’s post-secondary campuses in the 2026 legislative session. The Medication Abortion on College Campuses bill would meet student needs by requiring all public colleges and universities with and without health centers to provide access to medication abortion care.

Add your name today to our open letter urging Washington legislators to pass the Medication Abortion on College Campuses bill.

Students across Washington state have been organizing since 2022 on their campuses and at the state legislature to expand reproductive healthcare services. Inspired by student advocates in CA, NY and MA, students at the University of Washington-Seattle began organizing to bring medication abortion services to their campus health center. Since the Dobbs decision, these efforts expanded to include statewide legislation so that students from campuses of all sizes across the state can get access to expanded, direct and dignified abortion care with minimal disruptions to their lives.

In 2023, and in partnership with Advocates for Youth, student coordinators convened a student advisory board with members from campuses across the state to ensure that student voices and perspectives continue to inform the legislative process and implementation plans. Our 2025-2026 cohort of the student advisory board consists of thirteen members across five campuses including community colleges, private and public universities. Board members are currently advocating for increased accessibility and transparency regarding the sexual and reproductive health services available on their campuses, the referral processes for medication abortion services for campuses without health centers, and offering peer support services to fellow students seeking abortion care on their campuses and legislation to mandate statewide expansion of abortion services on campuses.
