Sexual Assault

Melissa

Melissa created this feature on sexual assault. She was a student at James Madison University who interned at Advocates for Youth in the summer of 2001. She previously interned at Citizens Against Sexual Assault.

Sexual assault is a serious concern among youth. This feature discusses the issues surrounding sexual assault.

The articles are:

  • The Empowering Inner Potential to End Violence—An insightful article on the power we have to work towards ending sexual violence.
  • Glossary—A list of terms used around sexual assault issues to increase your familiarity.
  • Male/Male Sexual Violence—If you or a friend has experienced sexual violence between men, please read this piece for tips on coping and finding support.
  • Secondary Survivors—You are a secondary survivor if a friend, partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, mother, sister, child, or anyone you are very close to is a survivor of sexual assault or physical or emotional abuse. This article features some suggestions for secondary survivors.
  • Quiz—What are the chances that a woman will be a victim of a sexual assault in her lifetime? What percentage of the time do the victim and rapist know each other? Find out the answers here.

The stories are:

  • If Robbery Victims Were Treated Like Rape Victims—"1. The victims expensive suit, watch, and nice home would be cited as tempting robbers beyond human endurance …"
  • Listen—"When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving advice, you have not done what I asked …"
  • Missoula Rape Poem—"There is no difference between being raped and being pushed down a flight of cement steps except that the wounds also bleed inside …"
  • One Kid's Story—"Like most people, I have my own struggles and problems that I've had to learn to deal with. For me, one of these struggles has been learning to cope with childhood abuse. When I was a little boy, I was molested. I feel a little odd describing myself as a little boy, because when I was a small child I was always told that I was a girl by everyone—my parents, teachers, doctors, everyone …"
