Mo's Bio, 18, Oregon
My name is Mo and I am a freshman at Portland State University in Oregon. I don’t really know where I’m going in life, what my major will be, or much else about my future. At one point, I sort of got tossed into volunteering with LGBT youth, and I just kept volunteering for other things. I traveled a lot as a kid and like to consider myself pretty savvy about other cultures and identities. In my last few years in high school, I lived in a very positive community that constantly challenged and encouraged everyone to volunteer and do their part to give back to the community while having fun. Cheesy as it sounds, it wasn’t half bad.
For a while I was a youth volunteer at SMYRC (Sexual Minority Resource Center), and through a friend I ended up also joining a volunteer group called Teen to Teen. Teen to Teen is a group of young people in the Portland area who educate other youth on safe sex, STIs, and relationships. We distribute zines and buttons that promote safe sex and encourage youth to discuss sexuality openly. I think it is so important for youth to talk about sex both seriously and jokingly. Without open communication, a lot of youth are just left with the media’s portrayal of what youth think and how they act, which reinforces stereotypes about young people and can also spread false assumptions about what is or isn’t safe.
