Be a Hero

Age: 18
Hometown: Portland, OR

Entry: “Be a Hero”

THE LOCAL AND THE NATIONAL

“It’s really nice to see that there are places with the resources to do what Advocates for Youth does. I’m really happy to see that [they have] the power to have this contest and actually gets youth involved, and actually see effects and see changes.”

MY PARENTS: CONDOM ADVOCATES?

“I heard from one of the Teen To Teen people they received a postcard one day and it had the little, you know, condom head stick figure hero. And she had a letter on the back, and she was just so excited cause she knew I had created that.”

KNOWING I MADE A DIFFERENCE

“To know that a bunch of people were seeing this little guy and maybe chuckling at it or maybe looking for a second and reading it just totally lit me up. To know that people would see this and maybe someone would be like ‘Hey look at this. You know, this is silly looking,’ and then they would be a little more comfortable talking about it, talking about condoms and talking about safe sex.”

YOUTH EDUCATION GETS TO OTHER YOUTH MORE

“I think that youth education gets to other youth more. Just watching a Powerpoint that a teacher presents doesn’t sink in as much as a kid saying to a friend ‘did you use a condom?’”
