Marika's Bio, 18, California

Marika, Condom Contest Winner
After Dinner Mint

I was born in Las Vegas, NV, but raised in Los Angeles, CA (with a brief stint in San Luis Obispo, CA). I have two sisters, one older, one younger. I am a freshman at Tufts University in Medford/Somerville, MA. My parents, school and community have been very supportive in everything I do.

I have been involved in Amnesty International, dance, and volunteer programs for children. During my senior year, I also joined the reproductive rights student organization that was started at my high school. The organization was started in response to recent government interference with reproductive rights. I plan to remain involved in these and similar issues in the future

While working on an AIDS awareness dance at my high school, one of the teachers gave me a handout with the link to the condom contest. I went to the web site one day to put off doing school work and with the excuse that the contest was school related and was for a good cause. I then proceeded to make several condom pictures and send all of them to the teacher who had given me the handout until he said “Stop! There are too many.” When I won the contest, I gave him the flyers of my winning entry to be use at the AIDS awareness dance in the future, which despite his earlier complaining, he appreciated.

I hope that more teens are educated and realize how important an issue HIV/AIDS is.
