Jesse's Bio, 18, Maryland

Jesse, Condom Contest Winner
Stop. Drop. And Roll.

My name is Jesse and I am an 18 year old high school senior in Maryland. I’m preparing for college and, essentially, for life. My aspirations include becoming a successful political speech writer and, one day, running for public office. Activism has made me an empowered and strong individual with a secure sense of what my future holds.

I believe that my experiences have given me a unique perspective. I work with YouthResource, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender online peer education program of Advocates for Youth. As a peer-to-peer education website, by and for youth, YouthResource focuses on sexual health issues, coming out, sexual orientation, gender identity and youth activism. YouthResource peer educators also contribute to the YouthResource website through writing informational articles on a range of topics.

I am also a former Student Coordinator for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) where I facilitated workshops, days of action and other events. I also educated my community on safer schools issues and conducted a series of lobby days for safe schools policy work in the nation’s capital.

I participated in the contest because, honestly, playing with condoms is fun. And why waste condoms that you can hand out, when you can play with them on the computer instead? It’s great for procrastination, for laughs, and for spreading awareness about condom usage. I even talked to my grandmother about the contest. And, even though she is from a generation and a home that is not open about discussions of sexuality, she actually enjoyed knowing I was doing something positive.

When I “grow up” and run for office, rest assured that I’ll still be a sexual and reproductive health advocate. Activism is what I do!
