It's Time For a Change
By Rebecca, Member, Young Women of Color Leadership Council, Advocates for Youth
Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, I'm currently an undergraduate at a university in Massachusetts. I hope to graduate in 2008 with a degree in Government and a citation in Spanish. The majority of my experience in reproductive health has been in family planning, with a concentration on policy and teen pregnancy in the Hispanic community, and I am very excited to have this opportunity to work with so many amazing people on the wider issue of HIV/AIDS prevention among all women of color.
I believe that there is no more important issue facing our communities--gender, ethnic, and racial or local, regional, and national—than HIV/AIDS. The spread of HIV among women of color is closely tied to the challenges we face in many other areas—education, politics, and health, most prominently—and relates to information, engagement, representation, activism, and empowerment. It's time for a change. I am honored to have a chance to be a part of that change with the Young Women of Color Leadership Council.
Along with serving as a member of YWOC for Advocates for Youth, I am on the advisory board of Campus Progress, a nationwide network of youth working for progressive causes. At home, in North Carolina, I was a volunteer with the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition. On campus, I just finished a term as co-Director of the Harvard Students for Choice and have served for two years as a senior editor of the Harvard International Review. I've also done research in reproductive rights and abortion at the UNC-CH Institute of Government. My ultimate goal is to attend law school to pursue a career in legal advocacy on behalf of women and children.
