STIs Are Serious Business and Everybody Ought to Know How to Protect Themselves
By Lanine, Member, Young Women of Color Leadership Council, Advocates for
Youth
I was born in the Bronx, then lived in Manhattan for several years. New Jersey has been my home for the last 13 years. I now attend Spelman University, in Atlanta, GA.
Simple curiosity sparked my interest in health issues and HIV and AIDS prevention. But once I started speaking to kids about the spread of STIs and about other health issues, I realized that STIs were serious business and that everybody ought to know how to protect themselves. Working with the issues of HIV and AIDS has made me more sensitive and understanding to anyone affected by the epidemic. It has also given me an opportunity to educate people who have negative and inaccurate notions about how STIs are transmitted.
My passion led me to work with groups such as SAVVY (Students against Violence and Victimization of Youth) and TAPPS (Teens about Pregnancy Prevention and Stuff). Now, as a part of the Young Women of Color Leadership Council, I organize events and distribute pamphlets or flyers that give accurate statistics and information on HIV prevention and other key issues. Additionally, I join forces with other college women who have the same goals—because many heads are better then one. If you need a friend or help, then I will be supportive and will try to point you in the right direction.
