Even a Seemingly Small Effort Can Have a Significant Impact
By Krystle, Member, International Youth Leadership Council, Advocates for Youth
Aloha! My name is Krystle and I am a junior at Georgetown University. I was born and raised in Hawaii, in a very culturally vibrant environment. I love learning about new cultures and new languages. As I have learned about new cultures, I have become increasingly interested in the issues facing young people in developing countries.
On my campus, I am a part of the OurMoment Board, a group which seeks to keep students and the DC community aware of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. We are responsible for networking with college organizations on and off campus to create a unified stance on various international issues. I am also co-chair for the Diversity in International Affairs Committee, which provides low income public school students who have an interest in International Affairs a chance to interact with Georgetown professors and student leaders for a weekend on campus. The Committee is also in the process of creating a High School Mentoring Program, whereby high school students will be able to keep in contact with a Georgetown student about topics of interest. I am also a part of the Asian Pacific Heritage Month Committee, which plans lectures, food fests, and events to reach out to the student body about the culture of the Asian-Pacific region.
I believe lasting change can be made through effective legislative actions. We can make the world a better place by standing together to combat HIV and AIDS in the developing world. Even a seemingly small effort can have a significant impact on a young person’s life.
