I am Using My Knowledge and My Passion to Make a Change in My Community

By Giovanna, Member, Young Women of Color Leadership Council, Advocates for Youth

giovanna, youth activistMy name is Giovanna and I am from Los Angeles, CA. I am a sophomore at a university in Michigan where I am majoring in Sociology and minoring in International Studies.

In February 2005 I worked for an organization called God’s Love We Deliver, which prepares and delivers hot meals to people living with HIV/AIDS throughout New York City. I had some knowledge of the HIV/AIDS virus before, but after going out into the community and experiencing how much a little help could do, I developed a need to do something more about this epidemic. Advocates for Youth is providing me the opportunity to do that.

Since HIV/AIDS is something that can be prevented, the question is “Well then… why isn’t it?” In our communities there is a severe lack of education surrounding HIV/AIDS: education that could help prevent the transmission of the virus, and decrease the rates of infection. After recognizing this, it was impossible for me to not do something about it.

Although it is only my first year working with Advocates for Youth, the amount of knowledge I have gained is immeasurable. This knowledge has further fueled by desire to reach out to my community. Young women of color are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS virus. As part of the Young Women of Color Leadership Council, I am using my knowledge and my passion to make that change in my community: to “educate, include, and empower”.
