Long-Time Women's Rights Activist

I was born and raised in a small town outside of Las Vegas, NV and attend college at the University of Chicago. I have a double major in Gender Studies and Human Development and hope to go into feminist anthropology.
I've been a long-time women's rights activist. In my first year of college, I joined an organization called Women and Youth Supporting Each Other (WYSE). WYSE is a middle mentoring organization serving middle school students. We cover numerous issues important to adolescents, ranging from birth control to gangs to nutrition to friendship.
During my second year of college, I became increasingly alarmed at these girls' lack of knowledge about sexuality and helped to start another organization on my campus called Sex Education Activists (SEA). For the past two years, SEA has concentrated on winning support for comprehensive sexuality education in Chicago public schools, and last year Chicago's Board of Education approved implementation of medically accurate, age-appropriate comprehensive sexuality education curricula in all of their schools. This year, SEA will be working to influence Senators Durbin and Obama to sign on as co-sponsors of the REAL Act and will continue to educate our campus and community about adolescent sexual health issues.
