Educating Myself So That I Can Teach Others
By Carmen, former member, International Youth Leadership Council, Advocates for Youth
For me, becoming an activist has been a journey, a process that I have recently embarked upon and am still undergoing. Throughout high school, and even until my freshman year of college, I was aware of this thing called the AIDS epidemic, but it was not until I became involved in the International Youth Leadership Council at Advocates for Youth that I learned just how severe its effects were domestically and globally. Since then, I have become more knowledgeable in regards to not just the statistics about global HIV and AIDS, but also about the policies and politics that are having negative results in our world, especially on youth. What amazes me is that policy makers around the world have the ability to allocate resources and funds to better combat this epidemic, and yet they are not doing so.
I personally feel that the best way to influence change is through education. I cannot claim that I know everything-I still have so much to learn, but in my own journey of learning, I have realized I am able to educate others as well. That has been my main motivation in becoming an activist- to educate myself so that I can teach others. And although what I may be doing may seem small in the grand scheme of things, it is encouraging to know that through the efforts of all activists, especially those advocating to the youth, many more people like me- people who are aware that there is a problem, but unaware as to how to contribute to finding a solution- will realize that we can bring about huge change.
