World AIDS Day

On December 1, 2004, MTV celebrated the outstanding work of youth activists in raising awareness on their college campuses and in their communities about HIV and AIDS. MTV flashed their pictures and bios to the world from a huge screen in New York City's Times Square. Below are the pictures of Advocates for Youth's youth activists, as they appeared in Times Square.

 

Allison, age 25, worked with young people in South Africa, Nigeria, and Botswana to help protect them from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Celeste, age 22, is currently interning at Advocates for Youth. She cannot remember a time without AIDS.

 

Chanel, age 21, is a member of Advocates for Youth's Young Women of Color Leadership Council. She works in her community to educate and empower young people.

Erika, age 21, understands the impact HIV and AIDS will have on her future in the health field and is taking an active role to make a difference.

 

Gail, age 30, is a grant writer for Advocates for Youth, a nonprofit organization working to ensure that young people have access to the services they need to prevent unintended pregnancies and HIV infection.

Jessie, age 27, co-founded the Day of Silence Project, a day where students protest the discrimination faced by those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender (GLBT). He currently works at Advocates for Youth providing support to GLBT young people.

 

Kayley, age 22, works for Advocates for Youth, coordinating the International Youth Leadership Council. She believes that the key to fighting this pandemic is the involvement of young people from around the world.

Mark, age 20, is an active member of the International Youth Leadership Council at Advocates for Youth, working primarily on global AIDS and health care issues.

 

Meagan, age 22, works at Advocates for Youth, educating others about emergency contraception, teen pregnancy prevention, and HIV prevention. She also helps raise money for the AIDS walk in her city.

Sarah, age 20, is a member of Advocates for Youth's International Youth Leadership Council, MEChA de Georgetown, and GU AIDS Coalition.

 

Shajine, age 20, is a founding member of Advocates for Youth's Young Women of Color Leadership Council. She works to educate and empower young people in Washington, DC.

Smita, age 27, currently works at Advocates for Youth to promote HIV prevention education and manages MySistahs.org, a Web site that addresses adolescent reproductive and sexual health issues.

 

Sonya, age 21, is an active member of the International Youth Leadership Council at Advocates for Youth in Washington, DC.
