The March for Women's Lives Changed My Life and Encouraged My Deeper Involvement

By Nina, Member, Young Women of Color Leadership Council, Advocates for Youth

My name is Nina, and I am 20 years old and from New Jersey. I am a junior at The College of New Jersey, majoring in English and women in gender studies, with minors in African American studies and women in leadership learning. On campus, I am active in VOX (Voices for Planned Parenthood), the Women's Center, and WILL (Women in Leadership and Learning). Through WILL, I am directing The College’s annual production of Vagina Monologues.

With VOX, I started working as a college freshman on sexual and reproductive health issues. I understood how important it is to keep the campus community informed and involved regarding reproductive health and rights. Through my involvement with VOX and my internship with Planned Parenthood of Mercer County, I led a busload of people to the March for Women's Lives in Washington, DC, in April of 2004. This experience changed my life and encouraged a deeper involvement with sexual and reproductive health issues as I encountered others who shared my passion for activism.

I look forward to serving on the Young Women of Leadership Council. During my year on the Council, I hope to learn new ways to reach out to my campus community and the community of Ewing that surrounds the campus. I plan to reach out to other women of color with education on sexual and reproductive health issues. I hope that, together, we can provide women with information and skills to make informed decisions and to keep safe. I believe that, as women of color, it is our duty to reach out to other women of color so that they know they are not alone. I believe that by sharing knowledge we can all be empowered to make healthy, safe decisions and to share knowledge with others in our communities.
