This Work Has Opened Many Doors of Opportunity and a New Door in My Heart
By Leondra, Member, Young Women of Color Leadership Council, Advocates for
Youth
I work in this field (sexual health promotion and HIV prevention) because I like the work and I am happy making a difference. I am good at what I do and, though the pay is nothing, I get compensation whenever someone shows a friend how to use a condom the way I showed them. Also, it keeps my conscience clear and my heart light to know that I am not just sitting around doing nothing when there are so many problems in my community. There was nothing in particular that got me involved in HIV and AIDS prevention; however, a tragic, HIV-related death in the family has been my motivation to stay in the field.
This work has opened many doors—both of opportunity and in my heart and mind—doors that make me patient, understanding, and appreciative. I am thankful every day for God's blessings; seeing how my life could have been makes me a better person. When working with the people in the community I can't help but be thankful.
HIV and AIDS have hit women of color hard. Women are and have been the strength of the nation and of the world, and we need to stop this epidemic from destroying us. In order to do this, we need to come together. As more women know about this epidemic and how to protect themselves, hopefully the number of infected women will lessen.
