Working with Youth

Nekeisha is a member of Jamaicans Safely Tackling Adolescent Reproductive Health through the International Youth Speak Out Project.

NekeishaMy name is Nekeisha. I am 20 years old, and I am from Westmoreland in Jamaica.  I am member of the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network (JYAN) and serve on their new International Youth Speak Out youth council on sexual and reproductive health. I am currently a student at the University of the West Indies and my major is international relations and economics. At my school, I am also a facilitator to assist first year students to transition to university life from high school. In this capacity, I am responsible for providing these students with information on sexual and reproductive health issues. I am passionate about these issues because I have seen first hand how people my age and older lack information about sexual and reproductive health in Jamaica. This April, I worked with the Ministry of Health to conduct a survey on how effective policies are targeted at improving youth reproductive and sexual health. To do the survey, we had to go all over Jamaica and what surprised me was how much young people my age and older than me didn’t really have the right information about sex or about rights. As a member of the JYAN council on sexual and reproductive health, I hope to change this so that young people are better informed and are knowledgeable about their rights and the policies in Jamaica that support their reproductive and sexual health.
