Policy and Advocacy
Prioritize Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights within Global Health Programs Print
Advocates supports global health policies and programs that are comprehensive, rights-based, and inclusive of young people’s sexual and reproductive health needs. Today’s generation of young people is the largest in history—their reproductive and sexual health will affect the health and well being of this planet for decades to come. Ensuring that they have the sexual and reproductive health information and services they need to make healthy decisions will not only improve maternal health and reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS, it will also assist the United States in meeting other Millennium Development Goals related to poverty, universal education, gender equality, child mortality, and environmental sustainability.

Global Health Initiative

In May 2009, President Obama announced the Global Health Initiative (GHI), a $63 billion plan to be rolled out over six years (2009 to 2014) to help partner countries improve health outcomes through strengthened health systems. The GHI aims to maximize the sustainable health impact the United States achieves for every dollar invested by implementing a woman- and girl-centered approach; increasing impact and efficiency through strategic coordination and integration; strengthening and leveraging key partnerships; encouraging country ownership and investing in country-led plans; improving metrics, monitoring and evaluation; and promoting research and innovation.

Within the GHI and related foreign assistance reform efforts, Advocates supports the specific inclusion of young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights; comprehensive approaches to sexuality education; youth-friendly services; disaggregated data by age, sex, and marital status; and meaningful engagement of young people in the design, implementation, and evaluation of  such programs.
