When I think about how many diseases are preventable, how we as a society are failing our children by lack of knowledge and empowerment on reproductive issues, and how many of my peers are left to make decisions without the proper tools or self-esteem- it drives me to hit the streets and start talking and spreading knowledge!

Vanessa, 23, is working toward a Master’s in Public Health and is an online peer educator with MySistahs.

My journey into activism started in college when I got accepted onto the International Youth leadership Council with Advocates for Youth. There, I was able to learn, explore, and be instrumental in so many aspect of reproductive health. I was also able to teach my peers about their bodies, relationships, and their health; which I find extremely rewarding. My motivation is love of my sister or brother and love for my field.

When I think about how many diseases are preventable, how we as a society are failing our children by lack of knowledge and empowerment on reproductive issues, and how many of my peers are left to make decisions without the proper tools or self-esteem- it drives me to hit the streets and start talking and spreading knowledge! I want young people for my generation to feel empowered to make the right decision regarding their relationships and overall well-being.

I feel it’s important for young people to advocate for sexual health and their rights because young people should be involved in decisions that affect them; we can’t let representatives that do not stand for our interests take over our ideals and decisions related to our health. If we really want to affect change- we need to be involved from the beginning and really speak our minds.
