Without the information about how sex affects their health and without resources to help them protect themselves, teenagers may harm themselves and others inadvertently. Education and the proper resources could help resolve this issue.

Micaela, 16, works with Advocates for Youth and the Texas Freedom Network as a member of the Texas Youth Leadership Council.

I am a senior at Carnegie Vanguard High School in Houston Texas. This is my second year as a Youth Leadership Council member.

Sex is a major issue today, not only because of the numerous diseases that it can spread if protection is not properly used, but also because of an increasing birthrate in teenagers. Without the information about how sex affects their health and without resources to help them protect themselves, teenagers may harm themselves and others inadvertently. Education and the proper resources could help resolve this issue.

I would like to continue to learn better and more effective ways of advocating. I hope to meet people with similar interests and beliefs who I can work with in order to try to resolve or improve legislation that will benefit youth today. By expressing an interest and either attending or organizing events which support the movement they can show their support. Any young person who is interested in improving sex education in their schools can research petitions and find resources which can help them make their opinion known, and make it matter.
