In public school I was offered  abstinence-only sex education through a guest speaker from a faith-based organization.  Looking back now, I can see how biased and simply unscientific the information was.

Chris, 22, works with Advocates for Youth and the Texas Freedom Network as a member of the Texas Youth Leadership Council. 

I believe we owe it to our young people to provide them with truthful, scientifically accurate information about sex so that they can make informed decisions.  Naturally, I am also interested in learning how the media shapes our perception of sexuality.

I got involved with sexual health activism my first year in college with the Texas Freedom Network Student Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin.  I have handed out condoms on campus and helped collected over one thousand signatures for Comprehensive Sex Ed at both the State and Federal level.

In public school I was offered  abstinence-only sex education through a guest speaker from a faith-based organization.  Looking back now, I can see how biased and simply unscientific the information was and I remember how terrified we all were of the STD slides.  Today I have an 8 year old sister and I know that it will not be long until it is time for her own sexuality education.  I can only hope that we will do better for our future generations, and I can be an agent of change who will make our education better.
