I want to ensure that young people in vulnerable situations have access to relevant resources and genuine support from peers.

Katie, 23, is an online peer educator with MySistahs.

Decisions made on all levels, from the government to the classroom to the attitude an individual chooses, can affect young people dramatically. But this also means that we have a unique perspective into the day-to-day reality of the and reproductive health movements. Armed with this awareness, young people are also unique in that we have the resilience and the courage to envision change and make it happen. One of the ways to make positive changes is through peer education and support.

I know what it's like to feel isolated because of who you are or experiences you've had. I know what it's like to have questions but feel like you have no one to ask, even if you're surrounded by friends and family-talking about very personal issues to the people who know you best can feel impossible. It's awkward and scary. It can also be hard to find someone to talk to in the first place. Maybe there isn't anyone in your community who shares a part of your identity,  whether it's being multiracial, LGBTQ, HIV positive, a woman of color, a sexual assault survivor, someone who has experienced teen pregnancy, etc. That's what I wanted to be a Sistah-to help give young women of color helpful resources and genuine support through other young women of color.

I want to increase awareness and visibility surrounding issues of sexual and reproductive health for young women of color, and empower young women to recognize our unique strength and the power of our voices. Audre Lorde once said, "When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak." MySistahs is a place where the words of young women of color are heard and welcomed. So...write to us and let us know how we can help!
