Restricted access to the most basic sexual and reproductive health information and services in developing nations only exasperates the problems of HIV/AIDS, STDs, and even maternal health.

Meron is a college senior and a member of the International Youth Leadership Council.

Several years ago I discovered that a relative of mine passed away from HIV/AIDS. After his passing, I began to notice how the stigma around HIV/AIDS can greatly interfere with taking the necessary steps to fight the disease. As a result, I have become very passionate about learning more about the social and political issues that affect this epidemic.

My experience in traveling to Ethiopia has also influenced my interest in sexual and reproductive health rights. The farther away I traveled from the cities the more it became apparent that basic services of any kind are harder for the average person who lives in the country side Restricted access to the most basic sexual and reproductive health information and services in developing nations only exasperates the problems of HIV/AIDS, STDs, and even maternal health. Seeing people in my own country, plighted by poverty and disease, has influenced me to become involved in the Advocates for Youth International Youth Leadership Council.
