I do my job knowing that I am helping make a change in our society and I dream of the day that HIV/AIDS is cured. My motivation is simply to see that I am helping, and it is the best feeling in this world!

Susana, 17, is a high school senior and an activist with the South Carolina Youth Activist Network.

My name is Susana Cuellar. I was born in Bogota, Colombia, South America. When I was eight years old my family and I moved to South Carolina, where we experienced the biggest and most difficult changes of our lives! We had to adapt to a completely different culture, language, and lifestyle. I started the third grade not knowing English and clueless of what was going on in my life at the time. My passion is my culture; the music, the dances, the music, the language, the lifestyle! I love everything about Latino culture and I feel like moving here has helped me appreciate it even more.

Working as a Youth Activist has opened my eyes to so many things! I learned that sexual health is a key to healthy living and that if everyone knew what us Youth Activists know, we wouldn’t have so many problems. It also helped me learn so much about myself and others; I became very open minded, and willing to see and learn many things. My hope for the next generation is for them to be leaders and take precautions to avoid all the problems we have today. I do my job knowing that I am helping make a change in our society and I  dream of the day that HIV/AIDS is cured. My motivation is simply to see that I am helping, and it is the best feeling in this world! I love what I do and wouldn’t change it for anything! It is extremely important to advocate for sexual health and rights because we are fighting for our future and all the next generations’ futures.
