Not many people in my community take action to make a difference in the number of pregnant teens in my school because they think it is something that is normal, but I know for a fact that young Hispanic and Latina women like myself deserve to be more then just housewives and teen parents and depend on the government for help.
Nicole, 17, works with Advocates for Youth and the Texas Freedom Network as a member of the Texas Youth Leadership Council. Not many people in my community take action to make a difference in the number of pregnant teens in my school because they think it is something that is normal, but I know for a fact that young Hispanic and Latina women like myself deserve to be more then just housewives and teen parents and depend on the government for help. Young teens in my community deserve a good education in how to keep themselves healthy, how to protect themselves from diseases, and how to prevent from becoming a parent before they are ready. I am passionate about getting sex education classes in Texas high schools because we really do need it. I am a peer educator and I have been trained on medically accurate information about many topics of sexual health, including abstinence and birth control. With this information I go to the students at my high school and I teach them and inform them of things they might have never learned about in their health class or are afraid to ask their parents. I have also worked to get petitions signed and sent to Senators and Congress on receiving comprehensive sex education classes in Texas high schools. I want the number of teen pregnancies in my community to decline and for the high rates of negative sexual health outcomes among young minority women to no longer exist, and for this to happen we need comprehensive sex education classes in our Texas High Schools. Advocating is just one little step towards better education. If young people were not involved, then no one would really know what we go through and how we really feel about reform. Change is what Texas high schools need, and that is what I strive for.
