(1 ½ hours) Key Issue Group Meetings

(1 hour) Brainstorming Exercise:  During this time, divide the larger group into smaller groups representing key issue groups (see note below regarding the recruitment of issue group members.) Designate a facilitator to lead each small group to brainstorm ideas and strategies that their task force could oversee/implement in the community.  Make sure the discussion is free-thinking.  At this time, the group should not consider money, people, or opposition; that is, the group is not allowed to consider barriers.  They are simply to list the potential strategies. Designate a recorder for each group.

(30 minutes) Draw conclusions/recommendations: Each issue group should choose three ideas that could be worked on in first year of local council’s effort.  Then, they should choose three that would be good for second year.

2:30 – 3:30 pm
(1 hour) Key Issue Group Summation
All groups reconvene in general session.
Each key issue group chooses a spokesperson who will share the group’s recommendations for year one and year two with all groups. (Put all in newsprint up on wall – pass out “Commitment Cards.”)  Collect and save, this will give you a volunteer base, and program support data.
3:30 – 4:00 pm
Closing-Invite a speaker who can motivate the audience to take action. The speaker will charge the group to support the local council and develop a community prevention plan utilizing the process identified above.

At another meeting, present all the recommendations from all groups. The Council Board may use them to develop the prevention plan for year one and year two, perhaps more.  There should be many ideas and needs identified by this process.
NOTE: To develop the Key Issue Group:
  • Look at Organization Chart with 10 circles
  • Each circle becomes an area for a Task Force
  • Appoint a chair for each circle who in turn will invite at least 20 people who represent this area (i.e., media, religious institutions). Seek to recruit at least 10 people in each area.  The chair should take the initiative through phone calls, letters, etc, to ensure an adequate number of people attend the forum.
  • In addition, send out a conference brochure with registration.  But remember, a personal invitation is always better than a simple paper invitation.
