These mistakes are often made by new board members. New board members may not:
- Understand the extent of the commitment.
- Understand the difference between policy and administration.
- Realize that membership on the board entails more than just showing up for scheduled meetings.
- Speak up or ask questions when appropriate.
- Take the time to learn about activities of the organization or even about current issues it faces.
- Understand the role of governance.
- Recognize the funding crisis currently affecting many nonprofit organizations.
- Recognize the value of constructive controversy among board members.
