Common Mistakes Made by New Board Members Print
These mistakes are often made by new board members. New board members may not:
  1. Understand the extent of the commitment.
  2. Understand the difference between policy and administration.
  3. Realize that membership on the board entails more than just showing up for scheduled meetings.
  4. Speak up or ask questions when appropriate.
  5. Take the time to learn about activities of the organization or even about current issues it faces.
  6. Understand the role of governance.
  7. Recognize the funding crisis currently affecting many nonprofit organizations.
  8. Recognize the value of constructive controversy among board members.
