  1. Identify needs.
    • Consider the present composition of the Board
    • Review the needs of the organization
    • Ensure adequate representation/assess gaps in specific categories
  2. Recruit members.
    • Identify individuals by name
    • Assign deadlines for contact
    • Court/educate potential members
      1. Don’t beg – it’s a privilege
      2. Ensure new members will support mission and values of organization
  3. Select members.
    • Ask new candidate to meet with President before joining
    • Ask new candidate to attend one board meeting before joining
    • Follow nominating process as outlined in bylaws
  4. Provide orientation for new members.
    • Conduct new member orientation
  5. Retain members.
