During Recruitment: - Describe the organization’s purpose, major programs, and funding sources.
- Provide written information on the organization.
- Discuss expectations of board members – meetings, committee assignments, tenure, time. Explain how they will be evaluated and when.
- Provide a list of current board members.
- Encourage the prospective member to visit the organization.
- Discuss the importance of board members’ fully supporting the organization’s mission and goals.
- Provide a copy of the bylaws and last annual audit.
During Preliminary Orientation: - Arrange for new board members to meet informally with key board members and staff.
- Provide a board orientation manual.
During Orientation: - Provide a thorough review of the board manual.
- Arrange an orientation meeting with the president, program committee chairs, and key staff.
- At the new member’s first board meeting, the president or board chair should introduce and welcome the new member(s).
