Board Orientation and Training Program Print
During Recruitment:
  1. Describe the organization’s purpose, major programs, and funding sources.
  2. Provide written information on the organization.
  3. Discuss expectations of board members – meetings, committee assignments, tenure, time. Explain how they will be evaluated and when.
  4. Provide a list of current board members.
  5. Encourage the prospective member to visit the organization.
  6. Discuss the importance of board members’ fully supporting the organization’s mission and goals.
  7. Provide a copy of the bylaws and last annual audit.
During Preliminary Orientation:
  1. Arrange for new board members to meet informally with key board members and staff.
  2. Provide a board orientation manual.
During Orientation:
  1. Provide a thorough review of the board manual.
  2. Arrange an orientation meeting with the president, program committee chairs, and key staff.
  3. At the new member’s first board meeting, the president or board chair should introduce and welcome the new member(s).
