Start-Up Funding: A Three Year Budget Print

The following chart is a suggested scheme for a general funds proposal that will fund the start up of a state organization.

Potential funders for the infrastructure might be:

  • United Way (s)
  • Foundations
  • State Teen Pregnancy Prevention Grants
  • TANFF Grants

You might also consider approaching 2-3 of the above and request that they share the start up costs.  This worked very well for a number of state organizations.

The scheme is based on the assumption that an executive director will be employed who is skilled and comfortable raising the additional portions of the budget and finding sources for the budget beyond the initial 3-year start up.

It is important that you develop a 3-year budget so that potential funders know their investment is not short term, but also so that as you get started – all of the Executive Director’s time is not devoted to financial survival.

In the first year, keep programs small so that executive director can focus on long term planning and funding.

In all program grants, a minimum of 15% should be included for general overhead (rent, electricity, insurance, etc.)

All grants should include a portion of the executive director’s salary (2-10%) for supervision and a portion of any other staff’s salary who will be involved in the project.
