Nevada Print

Nevada’s teens experience the highest teen pregnancy rate in the country as well as high AIDS and STI rates, and forty-three percent of Nevada’s high school students report already having had sex; yet Nevada continues to accept funding for abstinence-only programs.

The teen pregnancy rate is high in Nevada for all young women, but young women of color are disproportionately affected. Young African American women are twice as likely to experience pregnancy than young white women, and young Latinas are three times as likely. In addition, young Asian women in Nevada experience pregnancy at almost double the national rate for this group.

Sex Education Policy

Nevada requires sex education for students, but sets no requirement that young people learn about condoms and contraception. Nevada also requires HIV education for students.  See the statute governing sex education

Health Outcomes

Nevada has average rates for AIDS, and STIs – and the highest teen pregnancy rate of any state.
