Talking With TV: A Guide to Starting Dialogue With Youth
Channel
8: Public Access TV
You and your children can talk with TV—and
use it as a conversation starter and a resource for
addressing difficult but critically important adolescent
issues.
But talking to TV is equally important!
When you have a compliment, complaint or criticism, go to the
source. Letting networks and show producers, as well as advocacy
and education groups, know what you think about television shows,
tells everyone that you are paying attention. Your input also helps
them design future shows and gives them valuable feedback to enhance
current ones.
So—write, and write often and encourage your children to do the same!
Be specific about what you don't like, but be sure to let people know what
you do like. If you think a show's producer has portrayed an issue inappropriately,
communicate specifically how.
If there is an episode or a program that was right on target, let the writers,
producers and the networks know that you want to see more shows like that one.
The positive approach often is more effective in getting your ideas heard.
Letters that are a unrelieved string of complaints may be personally satisfying,
but will have less impact.
Each program description in the season supplement has the name and address
of the company that produced it. The addresses of the networks that air them
and other organizations concerned with television and young people are listed
below. Your letters to producers, networks and other organizations will be
welcomed—and noticed!
