News of the Absurd

Fear mongering about the HPV Vaccine

Over 5,000 women die from cervical cancer in the U.S. each year. The HPV vaccine will help to protect women against the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer. Even though the vaccine has been approved by the FDA for women and girls ages 9-26 and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), some people just can't get over the fact that it concerns sex.

Finding Hope in Kenya: Growing Up With HIV

Naina Dhingra, Advocates for Youth Director of International Policy traveled to Kenya in December, and had this to report:

The drive is one you don't forget: a terrible pot-holed road from town usually filled with bumper to bumper traffic. But the destination is well worth the price. Karen, a wealthy Nairobi suburb of mizungus (Swahili for "white people"), is usually not a destination for those working in international development. Kangemi and Kibera, the slums of Nairobi, are more up our alley. But tucked away in Karen is an inspiring program called Nyumbani. Nyumbani, which means "home" in Swahili, is a home for HIV+ children who have been orphaned or abandoned.

Take P.A.R.T.!

Take Positive Action for Responsible Television (Take P.A.R.T.) to support accurate sexual health information and positive images on television.

This month, we recognize the hit series, Grey's Anatomy on ABC and the reality show, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency on Oxygen.

  • Grey's Anatomy demonstrates that one supportive adult can make all the difference in the life of a young person.
To send a letter in support of Grey's Anatomy to ABC and the FCC, visit our action center.
  • The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency brings attention to the trauma many GLBTQ young people face when they hide their sexual orientation.
To send a letter in support of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency to Oxygen and the FCC, visit our action center.

Responsible television means depicting storylines that can raise public awareness of important and difficult issues. These storylines encourage adult-youth communication. Send letters in support of Grey's Anatomy and the Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

Also, read our letter to the Executive Producers of ABC's Desperate Housewives. The January 14, 2007 episode of Desperate Housewives entitled “Not While I’m Around” included erroneous and, at times, dangerous information about sexual and reproductive health.
