Emergency Contraception: A Puppet Parable of Politics & Polemics
Miss Piggy fought for the right to love a frog; Pinocchio for his right to be real. Cookie Monster fought for his right to eat cookies, while Oscar the Grouch fought for the right to be left alone! Bert and Ernie—well, they are still fighting!
Who's fighting for young people's rights? Did you know that young women, regardless of age, in more than 30 countries around the world have access to emergency contraception (EC) without a doctor's prescription? But, not here in the United States!
Why not? Because, ultra conservatives in the U.S. Congress have pressured the FDA to keep EC—also known as the morning after pill—difficult to obtain, especially for young women. They argue without basis that widespread availability of EC would promote promiscuity!
Think these politicians are hypocritical in arguing that abortion is wrong, but restricting access to medication that could make abortion less necessary? So do we!
We may not be Crank Yankers, but here's our try at puppet activism. To see our short film and to make your voice count, visit http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/ec/

The Seventh European Study Tour Is June 3-20, 2005
Teen birth, teen abortion, and STI rates in the United States are higher than in most other industrialized countries. Thus, Advocates for Youth and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will sponsor the seventh European study tour, June 3-20, 2005. The organization will select 30 participants to explore and identify strategies, programs, and policies in the Netherlands, France, and Germany that have positively influenced adolescent sexual behavior and outcomes.
The final deadline for applications is Friday, February 4, 2005. For a PDF file of the European study tour application as well as information on who should apply, selection criteria, and the tentative program itinerary, visit http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/news/events/stdytour.htm
