Statement of James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth, on the
Introduction of the Putting Prevention First Act
WASHINGTON, DC (April 21, 2004) For the first time, Congress has the
opportunity to champion legislation that offers to protect a full gamut
of reproductive rights that affect women and young people. The Putting
Prevention First Act provides critical information and health care services
to reduce unwanted pregnancies and stem the spread of STDs. I urge Congress
to pass this bill quickly for the sake of our nation's women and
young people.
It's time to get real and realize we can't censor
information or health rights from young people in this era of HIV/AIDS.
The Putting Prevention First Act—which provides for a full
range of issues from sex education to family planning to
contraceptive access—is
a step in the right direction.
I would like to thank Representatives
Slaughter, Greenwood, DeGette, and Johnson, for taking leadership in
supporting science-based information
for young people. I urge Congress to pass this bill quickly,
because preventing unwanted pregnancies and the spread of STDs and making
abortion
less necessary are issues that go above partisan politics.
The health of the nation's women and young people hangs in the
balance.
