Advocates for Youth's International Youth Leadership Council Honored by United
Nations Association
Ms. Naina Dhingra Wins "Young Visionary" Award
WASHINGTON, DC (October 25, 2002)
Tomorrow, Advocates for Youth's International
Youth Leadership Council (IYLC)
will be honored with a Blue Ribbon
Award for Program Excellence from the
United Nations Association (UNA).
The award is presented to an institution or individual who works tirelessly
in promoting the goals of the United Nations and who affirms the community's
commitment to international cooperation.
For the past few years, the International Youth Leadership Council of Advocates
for Youth has been encouraging youth to take leadership roles in advocating
for increased U.S. funding for international family planning and global HIV/AIDS
prevention and treatment, and, in their communities, for better and more responsible
sex education. As a result of this work, this past year members of the IYLC
met with congressional representatives, conducted press briefings, participated
in the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS, and worked
with other youth activists from around the world to promote U.S. investment
in international family planning and global HIV prevention.
"Young people ages 15-24 make up half of all new HIV infections worldwide," said
James Wagoner, President of Advocates for Youth. "The amazing young people of
the IYLC are providing a little heard voice for their generation, and I am very
happy to see them honored for their efforts."
Ms. Naina Dhingra, Public Affairs Associate
for Advocates for Youth, will be honored
with the first ever UNA "Young Visionary" Award. Naina, a student at
George Washington University, earns the award for "her tireless activism in
the global fight against HIV/AIDS."
Each year, UNA celebrates the anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter
with programs which reflect the diverse roles and issues in which the UN system
plays a critical role. This year, events will include the first ever mayoral
proclamation of UN Day in Washington, a foreign policy debate at the CATO Institute,
a series of student forums hosted by seven DC-area Universities, and a panel
discussion on the UN's role in Africa. The Awards Presentation takes place
at the Marvin Center at George Washington University.
Advocates for Youth is an international, nonprofit organization that works
in the U.S. and the developing world to create programs and support policies
that help young people make safe, responsible decisions about their sexual
and reproductive health.
