Hypocrisy of Abstinence-Only
Proponents Exposed
Statement of James Wagoner, President of Advocates
for Youth
WASHINGTON, DC (April 24, 2002)
In mark-up today, the House Energy and
Commerce Committee rejected amendments
requiring abstinence-only-until-marriage
programs to be medically accurate and effective in
preventing teen pregnancy.
"If advocates of abstinence-only education truly want their programs to
be effective, as they claimed before Congress just yesterday, they would not
have voted against amendments to ensure that government funding go only to programs
that provide medically accurate information and are effective in reducing teen
pregnancy. Their bluff has been called."
Advocates for Youth is a national, nonprofit organization
that creates programs and supports policies that help
young people make safe, responsible decisions
about their sexual and reproductive health.
