What REALLY Works
in Sexuality Education?
Forum to Discuss Ways to Provide
Young People With
Information on Abstinence and Contraception |
|
|
WHAT: |
Young people's sexual health has been a hot debate
in the media recently. Last Thursday, Secretary of
State Colin Powell publicly encouraged the use of condoms
among sexually active youth, urging them to protect
themselves against HIV/AIDS. This follows on the heels
of President Bush's recent budget proposal calling
for increased funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage
education programs—programs that prohibit the provision
of information about condoms for the prevention of
sexually transmitted disease, including HIV/AIDS.
So what really works in sexuality education?
On Tuesday, Advocates for Youth and Planned
Parenthood Affiliates of California will bring
together policy makers, health care professionals,
educators, and youth activists for a policy briefing
to discuss the state of adolescent sexual health in
California and nationally. The panelists will include
state and national experts on comprehensive sexuality
education—education that provides strong messages
about abstinence and contraception. These experts will
discuss why sexuality education cannot be an either/or proposition,
and why countries in Western Europe have dramatically
lower rates of teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Young people
need information about both abstinence and accurate
information about contraception and disease prevention
methods. |
