Advocates
for Youth Honors Dr. Michael Carrera at National Conference
WASHINGTON,
DC (November 27, 2001) Advocates for Youth will honor Dr. Michael
Carrera of the Children's
Aid Society and Stern National Adolescent Sexuality Training Center
as the winner of the Supernova Award for 2001 at an award
luncheon on December 3, 2001, at the Wyndham Hotel in Washington, DC.
The Supernova Award was
created to honor long-term leadership, dedication, vision, and positive
impact as an agent for change in the area of adolescent sexual and
reproductive health.
Dr. Carrera
has been a leader in the field of sexuality education for over forty
years. His many publications, including Sex: The Facts and The
Acts, have been translated into 17 languages for use around the
world. The Carrera model on adolescent sexual health is one of the
most effective programs in the world for preventing teen pregnancy,
delaying sexual initiation, and increasing use of contraception.
"Not
only is Dr. Carrera highly respected for his work in sexuality education,
but for his long-standing commitment to giving youth the information
they need to make responsible sexual decisions as well," said
Barbara Huberman, Director of Education and Outreach for Advocates
for Youth. "His tireless enthusiasm offers young people the opportunity
to empower themselves and to make the responsible decisions
about their sexual health that will save their lives."
Advocates
for Youth's 20th Anniversary Conference, Rights. Respect. Responsibility.®:
A New Paradigm for Healthy Adolescent Sexuality, will be held
December 2-4, 2001, in Washington, DC. This three-day learning
opportunity will challenge youth-serving professionals,
sexuality educators, policy
makers, health care providers, and youth themselves to
examine current adolescent reproductive and sexual health
policy and practice and to
embrace a new paradigm—one that affirms adolescent sexual development
as normal and healthy.
Advocates
for Youth is an international, nonprofit organization that works in
the U.S. and the developing world to create programs and support policies
that help young people make safe, responsible decisions about their
sexual and reproductive health.
