Advocates
for Youth and the AIDS
Vaccine Advocacy Coalition will
join together at the Washington, DC Johns Hopkins
HIV
vaccine clinic to discuss the implications of
current HIV vaccine trials on those most at risk
for HIV—young
people, ages 15-24. The organizations will urge
the scientific community to recognize the urgency
of funding a vaccine that can be administered
to young people before they become
sexually active.
While young people make up 50% of all new HIV
infections, more than 80% of HIV vaccine trial
participants are adults ages 25-50. Fewer than 1% of
participants are under age 18, yet 65% of young people
in the United States are sexually active by that age.
Youth, youth leaders, and experts in the field will discuss
why young people must be included in HIV
vaccine trials and will call on vaccine trial sites to
immediately increase their commitment to youth's participation.
Medical experts will discuss current vaccine trials and
the anticipated timing of FDA approval.
During the event, a vaccine trial participant
will receive a vaccine injection and respond
to questions about involvement in the trials.
