New Study Examines the High Costs to Taxpayers of
Teen Pregnancy and the Failure to Invest in Prevention
Congress Allocates
Millions of Dollars to Sex Education Programs That
Don't Work
WHAT: |
Results of a
new cost study of U.S. teen pregnancy prevention
vs. federal support to families begun by a teen birth,
conducted by Advocates for Youth, show the federal
government spends significantly less money—275
times less—on teen pregnancy prevention than
on support
and services to families begun by a birth to a teen.
These staggering numbers, as well
as additional analysis from the comprehensive study of teen pregnancy
prevention funding in America will be released at a morning Newsmaker,
hosted by the National Press Club.
|
WHEN: |
Wednesday, January 19, 2000
10:00 to 11:00 AM ET
|
WHERE: |
National Press Club
National Press Building, 13th Floor
Washington, DC 20045
|
WHO: |
James Wagoner, President,
Advocates for Youth will present the findings
of this study.
|
WHY: |
Despite high numbers of teen
pregnancies and an abundance of research on program effectiveness,
Congress continues to throw taxpayer money into sexuality
education programs that don't work.
The study, Teenage
Pregnancy, The Case For Prevention,
highlights the problems in the system and Wagoner
offers critical information on what the American
public wants, what young people say they need,
and what research shows works.
|
Advocates for Youth is an international, nonprofit
organization that creates programs and supports policies that help
young people make safe, responsible decisions about their sexual and
reproductive health.
