Advocates for Youth and Clinica Para Las Americas
are launching the first Spanish language HIV testing media
campaign targeting Latino males in the Los Angeles area.
This unique campaign is aimed at a population that has
largely been ignored in AIDS prevention outreach—Latino
men who do not self-identify as gay and yet are considered
at high-risk for HIV.
Latinos in the United States are disproportionately
affected by HIV/AIDS accounting for 17% of the total AIDS cases
while comprising only 9% of the population. The project
promotes early testing and counseling to increase awareness
within the Latino community. The campaign utilizes outdoor
media (billboards, bus shelter and catering truck boards)
and television and radio public service announcements to
communicate the universal message "No ignores al SIDA"—Don't
ignore AIDS.
The event will feature a special preview
of the television public service announcement, the unveiling
of the outdoor
media materials, and a live demonstration of the
new oral HIV test. The band Mariachi Los Amigos
will perform original HIV and AIDS awareness music. The
actors who performed in the public service announcement
will also be present.
